Kudremukh Controversy
In 2005, the apex court ordered the closure of mining by Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Limited (KIOCL) in 4,505 hectares of the green patch in the park. The order came after environmental groups in Karnataka pursued the matter despite a disinterested State. Steel ministry, Karnataka government and mining lobby are trying to reopen it.

IPL controversy

The Great Indian Bustard vanishes from Karera sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh. The Great Indian Bustard, locally known as the ‘son chidiya’ or golden bird is the most endangered member of the bustard family in the world and the total population in the wild may not exceed 700. Poaching and habitat deterioration are the two main causes for the drastic decline of the bird, which is now limited to Rajasthan’s Desert National Park and the Lala-Parjau Sanctuary in Gujarat. So environment minister, Jairam Ramesh, has proposed to denotify the sanctuary area.

World

Computers in companies, hospitals and schools around the world got stuck, repeatedly rebooting themselves on Wednesday after a McAfee anti-virus update identified a normal Windows file as a virus. The problem hit users of Windows XP Service Pack 3 operating system, according to McAfee, which released another update later in the day to fix the problem.

Business

Bids for a pan-India 3G spectrum licence doubled above the base price to Rs 6,968 crore on the eleventh day of an auction, government data showed on Thursday. Sixty-four rounds of bidding had been completed by Thursday, DoT said on its website. Nine mobile operators, including Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications and Vodafone's Indian unit, are participating in the auction.

RIL and its US partner Atlas Energy have acquired 42,344 acres of acreage in the gasrich Marcellus shale for about $192 million to boost their portfolio of area they propose to explore for extracting gas from sedimentary rocks. RIL had earlier this month bought 40% stake in about 3,00,000 acres Marcellus shale gas project of Atlas for $1.7 billion.
